Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art
750 Marguerite Drive, Winston Salem, NC 27106

ETHEREAL is a collection of upcycled spirit animals in mixed media gracing found bottles and cans. These little creatures breathe life again as we humans continue to clutter up their homes. Fitting then the trash transcends and become objects humans collect instead of tossing. These spirit animals along with additional mixed media originals and other Les III one-of-a-kinds graces the second annual FUSE Maker’s Market, an outdoor event created by the Metal Mavens; a trio of makers and friends collaborating to bolster artists and creative careers by facilitating dialog, making connections, strengthening communities, and generating opportunities.

Aligned with their mission, Tavia Brown, Erica Stankwytch Bailey and Annie Grimes Williams, are once again partnering with SECCA, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC, who will host the market on the historic grounds of Hanes House. Along with a community of 42 artists exhibiting at FUSE, this one day show will also feature 4 local food trucks and have experiences with collaborating local businesses and organizations, such as The Art SHAC and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

19 NC-based visual artists strut their stuff on the walls amid fresh baked cafe coffee mainstay Camino in downtown. Les III’s brand-new-year-in-the-making-Camino-solo-show slated for 2022 got jacked at the last minute. Because COVID. Because bakery renovation. Luckily he got picked up by another downtown gallery, Visual Index who very much wanted to exclusively exhibit his artwork. Then Les flipped the narrative. Since he was prevented from showing at Camino, he asked Camino and Visual Index to work together to host a future joint art exhibit featuring lotsa tasty Visual Index Gallery artists. They agreed. Here it is. And it is gorgeous. And if that’s not sweet enough — 15% of artist sales go to the Arts Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Anybody want a muffin?

Democracy is the central tenant of the United States of America; the voices of the people are heard through their elected representatives. Art is almost inextricably tied to the political landscape. As long as we have held elections, candidates have commissioned campaign posters to spread their messages, and political cartoons continue to succinctly depict the great debates and discourses of our government. For this exhibit, artists living and working in the greater Appalachian region will create unique works in reaction to a randomly selected political poster or cartoon from a historic presidential election.  Curated by Eric Drummond Smith.
